The island of Mauritius would be a paradise on earth for most people, but for golf enthusiasts it’s the ultimate hole-in-one experience.
With dramatic vistas of mountainous horizons or romantic white beaches contrasting with dazzling turquoise waters, it’s no wonder that Mauritius won the 2007 award for best long-haul golfing destination. The real wonder is that anyone manages to keep their mind on the game.
1994 saw the first golf course open at the Constance Belle Mare Plage with the Legend Championship course, to be followed in 2002 by the Links.
These two golf courses now host the prestigious European Seniors Tour as part of the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) Open.
Since 1994 the Legend golf course was host to the Mauritius Golf Open, and it’s testimony to the superb facilities and playing experience on the Legend course that in 2009 it was accorded world recognition when the protocol agreement with the European Senior Tour PGA was signed.
The site of the 18 hole, par 72, championship Legend golf course was originally an area used to breed deer. The natural beauty of the landscape has been maintained with the creation of forest-surrounded greens build to USPGA specifications. Top quality Tif Dwarf grasses provide the perfect putting surface.
Registration for the Constance Hotels Pro-Am and the Mauritius Air Trophy closes on 4th October 2010.
If world class competition golf isn’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of more relaxed leisure golf to be had elsewhere on the island.
Further south, for instance, in the Domaine de Bel Ombre region, is Heritage Le Telfair Golf and Spa resort. Facilities at the Golf du Chateau 18 hole, par 72 course include a driving range and a 9 hole initiation route for pitch and putt practice. The rolling landscape features wide fairways and generous greens surrounded by sugar cane fields. Lying just above sea level, the course incorporates lakes, streams and topical wooded areas as well as stunning sea views.
The golf course will remain open and operational during the renovations planned for the hotel later this year.
The Golf du Chateau also offers golf lessons which can be video recorded for later playback in order to maximise understanding of where you’re going wrong and how best to improve your game. Variety is offered in the form of privileged access to two other 18 hole golf courses in the region.
Whilst Mauritius takes its golf seriously and the courses are of an exceptionally high standard in order to offer a challenge to experienced players, recreational golfers will feel at home and relish the golfing experience whatever their level of expertise.
